Founding Stories: Josh Lau of Nymbl Systems aims to revolutionize Orthotics and Prosthetics with innovative software solutions

In a world where technological advancements have transformed so many sectors, there has been a glaring gap within the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics. While working closely with a clinic as a consultant, Josh Lau witnessed the struggles caused by outdated systems and inefficient processes, leaving a profound impact on patient care.

Motivated by the opportunity to bridge this divide, Josh co-founded Keyhorse-backed company Nymbl Systems, which is driven by a vision to provide innovative software solutions that revolutionize Orthotics and Prosthetics.

We asked Josh, founder and CEO of Nymbl, a few questions about his journey, inspirations, and predictions for the future of practice management.

How did you become interested in orthotics and prosthetists—and the use of software in connection?

JL: My interest in Orthotics and Prosthetics was sparked during my consulting work for an Orthotics and Prosthetics clinic. I was fascinated by the intricacies of the field and the profound impact it has on people's lives. Orthotics and Prosthetics have been and still are a very overlooked industry. However, I noticed a significant gap in the market when it came to software solutions. The clinic was struggling with inefficient processes and outdated systems, and I realized that the use of modern software could drastically improve its operations and patient care. This realization ignited my interest in combining my knowledge of software with the field of Orthotics and Prosthetics.

What inspired you to co-found a company?

JL: The inspiration to co-found Nymbl Systems came from a place of necessity. Initially, my goal was to find an existing software solution that could meet the needs of the Orthotics and Prosthetics clinic I was consulting for. However, after six months of searching without finding a suitable solution, I realized that there was a significant gap in the market. I saw an opportunity to create something that could not only help the clinic I was working with but also other clinics facing similar challenges. This need, coupled with my passion for improving healthcare through technology, inspired me to co-found Nymbl Systems.

The future of practice management lies in leveraging technology to improve both the patient experience and the efficiency of healthcare providers.

Tell us about your team: Who’s on it, and how did you meet?

JL: Our team at Nymbl Systems is a diverse group of individuals with a shared passion for improving healthcare and technology. We have software engineers, sales, trainers, support agents, marketers, and many more—each bringing unique perspectives and skills to the table. I met most of our team members through personal connections early on, then expanded to professional networking. Some were colleagues from previous jobs, while others were introduced to me by mutual contacts. We all share a common goal: to revolutionize the Orthotics and Prosthetics industry through innovative software solutions.

Where do you see practice management headed in the future?

JL: In the future, I see practice management becoming increasingly reliant on technology. With the advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, I believe we will see more automation in administrative tasks, leading to increased efficiency and accuracy. Furthermore, I anticipate a greater emphasis on patient-centric care, with software solutions enabling more personalized treatment plans and improved patient engagement. The future of practice management lies in leveraging technology to improve both the patient experience and the efficiency of healthcare providers.

What does success look like to Nymbl Systems in the short term and long term?

JL: In the short term, success for Nymbl Systems means providing a software solution that significantly improves the efficiency and effectiveness of Orthotics and Prosthetics clinics, along with other Home Medical Equipment Providers. We are currently launching into a couple other HME product lines, such as powered wheelchairs, respiratory, and sleep. We aim to see our software implemented in clinics across the country, leading to improved patient care and streamlined operations.

In the long term, our vision of success extends beyond just our software. We aim to become thought leaders in the field of Home Medical Equipment, driving innovation and setting new standards for patient care. We hope to influence policy and best practices and contribute to the advancement of the field as a whole. Ultimately, our success will be measured by the positive impact we have on the lives of patients and the healthcare providers who serve them.
